Have you ever had one of those days? You know, an absolutely terrible day that you were sure could never get worse…and then it did? Me, too. One of my favorite things to do when life stresses me out is to go to the movies and watch a comedy. I was recently invited to attend a media preview of Disney’s newest family movie, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, so I grabbed my eleven-year-old son and headed to the theater. We were in for a treat because never have comedy and bad luck gone together so well.
The movie begins with a happy family that seems to have everything going their way, except for eleven-year-old Alexander. Alexander is stuck in a long chain of bad days and it seems that mishaps have become the norm for his life. As he sits up late waiting for midnight on his birthday, he makes a wish. He wishes that his family would know what it is like to have a very bad day. The next morning everything changes.
Watching Alexander’s family go through their terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day is simply hilarious. My son was laughing so hard at times that I thought he might stop breathing as he sat there gasping for air and rolling in his seat. To say he enjoyed the movie would be a serious understatement. I loved it, too. I haven’t enjoyed a family movie this much in quite a long time. It was not just funny, it was fun. Going along for the ride was an adventure and a joy. Parents will relate to Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner’s characters and they will also appreciate the clean comedy and family-appropriate story.
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is rated PG and it is a comfortable and appropriate rating. There is a scene that includes a non-sexual use of the word penis and other scenes with very mild potty humor but the movie never goes into PG-13 territory. Without question, I will be taking my seven-year-old daughter to watch this movie.
