Cirque du Soleil Returns to Phoenix and I had the opportunity to chat with one of the members of the Varekai team last week.
Cirque du Soleil is headed back to the Valley this month with their show Varekai. Varekai, which means “wherever” is the story of Icarus, a Greek mythology character, who instead of dying he gets a new life and this is his story. A story of adaptation and rediscovery through the metaphors of each different act.
There are 50 performers, but about 100 people total that travel with the show. Varekai has been traveling for 12 years under a big top, but was only recently converted to an arena show about one year ago. Some of the most notable and breathtaking acts are the opening act which really sets the tone for the show, plus the trapeze artist and the hand balancing act are remarkable as well.
Performers spend 4 months to a year training in Cirque du Soleil’s facility in Montreal. They learn the ins and outs of being part of Cirque as well as things like how to do their own makeup for the show.
Varekai runs about 2 hours and 5 minutes with a 20 minute intermission. Are you ready to open your mind and be transported to the magical world of Varekai?

[…] Did you know Cirque Du Soleil is in town this weekend? The opening of Varekai is amazing as Icarus falls to the stage and loses his wings! Instead of dying as in the traditional Greek Mythology story, Icarus lives and this is his story.
